Septic system repair in Kannapolis can mean an older system on either side of a county line. Most of the city sits in Cabarrus County, and the rest is in Rowan. The city water system counts 1,208 water connections with septic systems. When a drain field clogs, you get slow drains, gurgling toilets, soggy ground over the lines or a backup.
Kannapolis sits about 25 miles southeast of our base in Statesville, inside the roughly 50-mile area Septic Samurai serves. We handle septic system repair by restoring the drain field from inside the tank you already own. We also install risers and effluent filters, run a maintenance plan and do diagnostic inspections. Call or text (980) 291-3805 for a free on-site evaluation of the tank and the field.

Sewer is the rule on Kannapolis city water. In its 2023 Local Water Supply Plan, the city water system reports 19,857 sewer connections. Septic is the smaller group, at 1,208 water connections in the same plan. That count covers city water customers only, so homes outside the city system are not in it.
On a septic lot, a slimy layer called biomat can build up around the drain lines and seal the soil. Our biological drain field restoration puts bacteria to work on it from inside the existing tank. As they digest it, the soil absorbs water again and the field can come back into service.
Kannapolis began as a mill town. In 1906 J.W. Cannon bought the land that later became the city. Cannon Manufacturing began production in 1908, on farmland along the historic wagon road between Salisbury and Charlotte. In 1914 it became known as the world's largest producer of sheets and towels.
Cannon Mills built 1,600 homes for its workers. The city itself was only incorporated in 1984, and it counted 53,114 residents at the 2020 census. Today the North Carolina Research Campus sits at the center of Kannapolis, with research in nutrition, disease prevention and agriculture.
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 count 25,395 homes in Kannapolis, with a median year built of 1989. More than four in ten were built before 1980, and about one in ten in 1939 or earlier. On a septic home from those years, the tank may be as old as the house.
If your tank sits under the lawn with no riser, each service visit starts with digging. We install septic tank risers, the round green risers with lids that bring tank access up to ground level. Most older tanks never had an effluent filter, which keeps undigested solids out of the drain field. We install one on the tank outlet and clean it on every service visit.
Kannapolis draws its water from Kannapolis Lake, a reservoir on Irish Buffalo Creek. The city's 2023 water plan also lists Second Creek, in the South Yadkin River sub-basin, as a stream source. The EPA notes that a failing septic system can release pathogens and nutrients into groundwater and surface water. In a city that draws water from a lake and a creek, a failing field is worth fixing.
Our septic aeration system does the restoring, with a small, quiet air pump outside the tank. Pumping needs drop sharply because the bacteria digest solids instead of storing them. When a tank still needs pumping, we refer that job out.
A restored field then goes on our septic system maintenance plan. Year one is included with the install: visits at about 30 days, six months and one year. After that come two visits a year, then one a year with a bacteria treatment once the system is stable.
Kannapolis covers about 34 square miles on the Cabarrus and Rowan county line, with the greater portion in Cabarrus County. J.W. Cannon's original land sat in both counties. US 29, called Cannon Boulevard in town, runs 7 miles south to Concord and 15 miles northeast to Salisbury. Interstate 85 bypasses the city on the south and the east.
Which health department handles your septic system depends on which side of that line your home sits on. On the Cabarrus side, Cabarrus Health Alliance Environmental Health issues septic permits for new systems and for repairs. On the Rowan side, Rowan County Environmental Health acts as the state's authorized agent for septic rules. The county says no repairs other than routine maintenance may be installed without a repair permit.
Rowan County also inspects existing septic systems before building permits for additions, new mobile homes or pools. Our guide to septic system permits in North Carolina covers permits across the state.
Our in-tank unit is a retrofit: nothing is replaced or expanded, and the drain field is not dug up. We tell you before work starts whether Cabarrus Health Alliance or Rowan County needs to be involved. Our septic system inspection is diagnostic, to find the cause of a problem and see whether restoration fits. We do not do real-estate inspections; in North Carolina, those need a state-certified inspector.

Septic Samurai restores failing septic drain fields biologically, with a unit that goes inside the tank you already own. The field stays in the ground and most installs are finished in a day.

A compact aeration and bacteria unit installs inside your existing septic tank. Air plus living bacteria digest the solids that would otherwise clog your drain field.

We install septic tank risers that bring the tank access up to ground level. Cracked or buried lids get replaced with a riser lid that fastens down.

An effluent filter screens solids out of the water leaving your septic tank, so they never reach the drain field. We install filters on existing tanks and clean them on every service visit.

Septic Samurai services septic systems on a set schedule around Statesville and the lakes. Each visit checks the tank and pump, cleans the effluent filter, inspects the drain field and adds bacteria.
